Defeating the Twin Snakes of Anxiety and Depression

In his essay, "The deformation and reformation of human character", Shunyamurti visualizes a new community of spiritually enlightened people, joining together as one cleansing and uplifting spiritual force, as the tonic to the "twin snakes" of anxiety and depression that now plague the world.

Below, I have summarized, and in some instances reinterpreted his original writing, in an attempt to convey the essence of it, while avoiding the complexities of his language, which is unfortunately even more opaque than usual:


There has been a collective loss of soul in the human species. Alienation, cynicism, and collective paranoid psychosis, are accelerating exponentially. We are losing our sense of values and our generosity of spirit. True communication is lost, as the deluge of data streams and technological apparatuses disrupt our thought processes, and keep us from wisdom and genuine rapport.

This loss of soul follows a previous loss of spirit that brought about modernization in the first place. The loss of both these dimensions of human reality remains unnoticed by most - people have become too dumbed-down to even be able to conceptualize, let alone grieve, such losses.

Psychology cannot keep up with this continuing deformation of human character. The only field even endeavoring to keep up is psychoanalysis, but it is mired in neurological explanations and the pharmaceutical industry's pill-pushing agenda, rather than offering insight and understanding, let alone transformation. Psychoanalysis stops before the promised land of superconscious presence, and thus can never guide patients beyond the threshold of neurosis to the real inner peace that passeth understanding.

The deformation of human character appears primarily as the twin snakes of anxiety and depression. These intertwine like a negative kundalini complex, creating a "death drive". These snakes are far more intelligent than the conscious mind of the human ego, so few spiritual warriors these days succeed in slaying their inner demons. Instead the demons usually win, as the weapons against them, which were forged thousands of years ago by such heroic figures as Buddha, Mahavira, Shankara, Socrates, and St. Paul, are now out of date. The snakes are far more powerful than they were in those days, and are now monstrous, and the modern weapons of psychoanalysis and various therapies are helpless against them.

Just as bacteria gain immunity from each new drug, in the same way the negative kundalini complex learns to overcome the power of prozac and paxil, and forces the employment of ever-larger doses of increasingly-dangerous chemicals, producing side-effects worse than the symptoms they were designed to treat. The twin snakes also learn the conceptual basis of psychoanalytic treatment and other therapies, and soon can sidestep and outwit even the most masterful therapists.

The twin snakes of anxiety and depression always confound the efforts to understand them - they react against, and feed upon, the very structure of reason itself. They frolic in the frustrations of their would-be conquerors. The archetype of terrorism lies here, in the black hole of the soul, where no light reaches. The snakes are shape-shifters, because they have no essence. They are form without substance. They are floating fields of nightmare - traumas that have never been lived. They cannot be healed by any reworking of history, nor by any reassessment of values. Reality itself is in dispute.

There is no longer rapport between individuals. The loss of social coherence, and the loss of connection between the soul and the lower self (ego), has left no channel for love to flow between us. The access to the Source has been cut off, and so the forces of life and creativity are no longer countering the sinister strangling forces of perversion and death.

To sustain life there must be an instrument of divine love and wisdom, in the form of a spiritual community in which all members have surrendered their separate egos into the sacrificial fire of unity. This can muster the spiritual power necessary to dissolve the negativity festering in the world. Only a united and divine energy field, which transcends individual bodily beings, can have the strength to swallow a black hole and live.

Such a force of goodness can open the portals of elevated potential in the human minds, and thus provide a path to human survival. This survival requires the death of the human ego in its current form, and a radical evolutionary rebirth as Life itself.

The goal is a rebirth of human community, and the incubation of the True Self in every member. How can such a community be created? One or more purified souls must radiate the essence of presence, silently and tirelessly, thus awakening others who are open to shifting into a higher reality. Wisdom must integrate perfectly with the power of love, to generate pure spiritual power to digest and assimilate the repressed traumas stewing in the subconscious realm.

The human ego fears emptiness, and the twin snakes of negativity have been nourished on this fear. The ego prefers anxiety and depression to emptiness.

To liberate the self, we must face the reality of absolute nothingness. The ego, which is itself a fantasy, then dissolves, and is replaced by awareness of the supreme presence of pure emptiness. The duality of emptiness and form dissolves into the wholeness of the one that is nothing (zero). This realization is an awakening, and it is contagious. A spiritual fermentation process will soon be underway in any group in which two or more have realized the absolute. Once this culture begins fermenting, the process accelerates rapidly. New potentials emerge spontaneously.

Many unprecedented kinds of spiritual community are, indeed, now forming around the world. Some will fail, others will continue to grow and evolve. We are in the midst of a planetary evolutionary process that no individual can control or even comprehend. Complete surrender to our intuitive higher selves creates divine links between us, and we join together as a super-organism. This is a spiritual globalization that is the inverse of the present globalization of corporate structures. In this way we can override the forces of negativity that are leading us to impending climactic, and climatic, doom.

The rebirth of divine consciousness is in process already. No power on Earth can resist it. The time to surrender is now.
