saved by the light

Dannion Brinkley, in his book "Saved by the Light" (ISBN 0-06-100889-3), describes 2 near death experiences (NDEs) he had, and the interim effects the first one had on his life. Those of us who have had an NDE will almost certainly find much to resonate in this book. I certainly did (see near death experiences for a description of my experiences), and found that much of what he described was familiar, in essence if not in detail. I quote here from the book, focussing on the NDEs themselves.first near death experience - struck by lightning
"From immense pain I found myself engulfed by peace and tranquility. It was a feeling I had never known before and have not known since. It was like bathing in a glorious calmness...

The Golden Age

I wrote the following when I was with the BKs - I have revised it in the light of subsequent realisations, and it combines elements of the BK version of paradise with that witnessed in my own visionary experiences.
The Golden Aged world is beautiful and new. It is perfect. Sorrow is unknown. Matter is very light, not dense and heavy like it is now. Our bodies are not quite transparent but, compared with what we are now accustomed to, they are ethereal. There are fewer species of animals than now, and they are all as peaceful and perfect as we are.

I am interested in perceptions and conceptions of heaven or paradise. The following is from translations from "The Gospel of Buddha" by Paul Carus (1894):
"
"Master, is the promise of the happy region vain talk and a myth?" enquired one monk.
"what is this promise?" asked the Buddha; and the disciple replied:
"There is in the west a region called the pure land, exquisitely adorned with gold and silver and precious gems. There are pure waters with golden sands, surrounded by pleasant walks and covered with large lotus flowers. joyous music is heard, and flowers rain down three times a day. There are singing birds whose harmonious notes proclaim the praises of religion, and in the minds of those who listen to their sweet sounds, remembrance arises of the Buddha, the law, and the brotherhood. No evil birth is possible there, and even the name of hell is unknown"... ....(more)

The most profound experience I have had in this life was a visionary experience of being a soul in a dimension of souls, a soul world if you like. This happened in 1989 - I was at an emotional low point in my life after a love affair that had gone very wrong. At the same time I had been working on myself spiritually for over a year, following intuition I had become vegetarian and was striving to be very temperate in all habits, and (I now know) was meditating regularly, though I thought I wasn't 'doing it right'. So I was struggling towards 'purity' and seeking help from 'beyond'. I was also living in a remote place with a spiritual history (15th century Celtic/Christian monastery).
I received over a few months a number of experiences, the last two of which were very powerful and changed my life, forming the basis of my spiritual understandings and beliefs ever since. Both happened when I was asleep, but were very real and very vivid and detailed.
